Shelley’s story in Voyage Phoenix Magazine
The Interview
-

Hi Shelley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been fascinated by beauty, in nature, people, interior design, fashion and makeup. I love the glow of a sunset, how light perfectly touches a face in a portrait, how a well-designed room feels like home, and how one perfect color can change everything.
For 20 plus years, I built a career in residential real estate, helping families find homes that felt like them. On the side, I ran a photography business, my true heartbeat. Portraits are my sweet spot, because capturing the human spirit reveals the raw, breathtaking beauty of each soul.
In 2016, I stumbled into personal color analysis. I had my colors done professionally by one of the major companies offering this service and their 4-season system draping typed me as a Spring. Bright, warm, cheerful. I loved it… until I didn’t. The colors felt like they were wearing me.
Fast forward a few years, I discovered True Colour International’s 12-Tone system. I was shocked to find out I’m actually a Soft Autumn. The color harmony was instant and undeniable. The soft, earthy tones of golds, sage greens, and dusty teals that highlighted my natural features instead of overpowering them. I looked back at old photos and laughed, those bright spring colors? Cute, but they completely drowned me out to where you couldn’t see me, only the colors.
TCI changed the game! The TCI method is based on science and the Munsell color system and full spectrum lighting. We measure all 3 dimensions of color: HUE (warm/cool/neutral), VALUE (light/dark), and CHROMA (bright/soft). Over 70% of people are neutral, not purely warm or cool. Altogether, the TCI 12 Tones encompass the full range of colors found in all humans.
I knew I had to share it. In 2023, I earned my professional certification through True Colour International, the gold standard of the industry.
Now, I help clients discover their True Colors in my Surprise studio. When a client sees their palette for the first time and says, “That’s me!”, it’s an emotional moment, they often tear up or laugh in astonishment. They walk out eager to bring those colors into their closet, makeup, living room, even their business design. It’s a practical shift that makes them look and feel more like themselves every day.
Weeks later, I’ll get a text or email saying, “I wore my colors to a meeting and got so many compliments,” or “This has truly changed how I see myself, thank you!” Those messages are why I love what I do. Bringing that kind of joy and confidence into someone’s life, that’s the real harmony!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While training for my True Colour International certification, I was set to launch in Los Angeles, my homebase, my network, my plan, at the time. Then life shifted. My mom needed me closer, so mid-training, I moved to Arizona’s West Valley. It was very risky opening a new business in an area where I knew very few people. But to me, risk isn’t reckless. it’s the contrast that reveals your true colors! In business or life, it’s about stacking odds with knowledge (like our full-spectrum lighting and precision died drapes) while honoring the unknown’s thrill. I’d tell fellow creatives: Assess, align with your ‘why,’ then move forward boldly. The payoff? That vibrant, unapologetic you, shining brighter for it. After all, 90% of first impressions are based on color alone. What’s riskier than playing small in a world of endless hues?”

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work? Also, risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’m a certified Personal Color Analyst with True Colour International (TCI), where I help clients discover their unique color harmony through the TCI 12 Tone method. This advanced approach goes beyond the traditional four-season color analysis, identifying 12 distinct tonal spaces, encompassing warm, cool, and neutral hues, based on the science of natural color harmony, human physiology, and the Munsell color system. Using precise tools, I provide accurate, personalized color palettes with 65 hues per tone, ensuring clients can confidently match colors for clothing, makeup, home decor, cosmetics and more. These premium palettes, made with archival materials, are trusted globally for their measurable accuracy.
In addition, I run a photography business and offer special portrait packages for clients and families who have their personal color analysis done in my studio.
